Location: Brevard, NC

Job Type: Full-time with benefits (grant-funded)

Salary Range: $55,000-$60,000 annually

Position Overview

FWRD Transylvania serves as the coordinating entity for long-term disaster recovery and preparedness efforts in Transylvania County, formed in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. FWRD works alongside local, state, and federal partners to coordinate disaster case management, identify and meet unmet needs, strengthen organizational capacity, and build a more resilient Transylvania County.

Position Summary

FWRD Transylvania serves as the coordinating entity for long-term disaster recovery and preparedness efforts in Transylvania County, formed in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The Disaster Case Manager (DCM) will support residents impacted by Hurricane Helene by connecting them with resources, tracking progress, and ensuring coordinated service delivery across partner organizations. This role requires compassion, strong organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate across multiple agencies and systems to help individuals and families rebuild their lives.

Key Responsibilities

Case Management & Client Support
  • Conduct intake and needs assessments for households impacted by disaster.
  • Develop individualized recovery plans that reflect each household’s unique needs and strengths.
  • Connect survivors with partner agencies for housing, repairs, financial aid, healthcare, and emotional or spiritual support.
  • Provide advocacy and follow-up to ensure clients receive appropriate and timely assistance.
  • Maintain case notes and documentation in compliance with confidentiality and reporting standards.
Coordination & Collaboration
  • Work closely with case managers from North Carolina Emergency Management, Catholic Charities, Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Housing Assistance, and other state/regional partners to ensure no duplication of effort and equitable service delivery.
  • Serve as the communication bridge between local nonprofits, government agencies, and the LTRG’s Construction + Volunteer and DCM/Unmet Needs Committees.
  • Attend coordination meetings and represent FWRD Transylvania in collaborative recovery and resilience efforts.
  • Support outreach and community engagement to identify unmet needs and strengthen trust among affected residents.
Data & Reporting
  • Maintain accurate records of cases, referrals, and outcomes.
  • Contribute to weekly and monthly progress reports for grant compliance.
  • Assist in compiling stories and data that demonstrate community impact.

Qualifications & Skills

  • A bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, community development, emergency management, or a related field is a plus, but not required.
  • Previous experience in a human services-related nonprofit preferred.
  • Willingness to learn about disaster recovery programs (FEMA, Red Cross, NCEM) and local community resources.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and advocacy skills.
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and flexibility with learning/creating client tracking systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a trauma-informed environment.
  • Spanish-English bilingual ability strongly preferred.

Work Environment

This is an exciting opportunity to join a new organization as it launches and help shape its future alongside a team of dedicated community leaders. Must be within commuting distance of Brevard, NC. The role includes a mix of office and field-based work, with regular engagement across Transylvania County through meetings and community events. Some evening or weekend hours may occasionally be needed to support outreach and disaster response efforts.
