Frequently Asked Questions
What Is a Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG)?
A Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG) is a local coalition of organizations, agencies, and community members that come together to support individuals and families after a disaster. While first responders and emergency services handle the immediate crisis, LTRGs focus on what comes next—helping people recover, rebuild, and reconnect for the long haul.
What does an LTRG do?
An LTRG helps coordinate resources, identify unmet needs, and fill gaps that individual organizations can’t tackle alone. This includes:
Supporting survivors through disaster case management

Why is an LTRG needed in Transylvania County?
When Hurricane Helene struck, it became clear that our community needed a more coordinated response to long-term recovery. Some people were still struggling months later—with housing, emotional trauma, and access to services. By forming TC-LTRG, we’ve created a structure that can support not just immediate needs, but a full recovery—especially for those most at risk of being left behind.
Who is part of the TC-LTRG?
Our members include nonprofits, faith groups, government partners, business leaders, and everyday neighbors who want to help. We’re guided by a volunteer Executive Committee and operate through working committees focused on things like housing, fundraising, communication, and emotional support.
How is the LTRG funded?
We’re supported through a combination of grants, donations, and in-kind contributions. Our fiscal sponsor is the Pisgah Health Foundation, and we’ve already received startup funding from Weeks of Compassion. We’re actively pursuing additional grants to sustain our work.
What kinds of disasters does an LTRG respond to?
LTRGs typically respond to large-scale events like hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or other emergencies that create significant long-term need. Part of our work is also defining what “activates” the LTRG in future events and how we coordinate with emergency management to respond appropriately.
How can I get help from the LTRG?
If you or someone you know is still recovering from Hurricane Helene or another recent crisis, you can reach out to us directly. We’re working to hire a part-time Disaster Case Manager who will help connect residents with resources, including home repairs, support services, and volunteer help.
