Reports To: Executive Committee, FWRD Transylvania (Transylvania County Long-Term Recovery Group) 

Location: Brevard, NC

Job Type: Full-time with benefits (grant-funded)

Salary Range: $75,000-$80,0000 annually

Position Overview

FWRD Transylvania serves as the coordinating entity for long-term disaster recovery and preparedness efforts in Transylvania County, formed in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. FWRD works alongside local, state, and federal partners to coordinate disaster case management, identify and meet unmet needs, strengthen organizational capacity, and build a more resilient Transylvania County.

Position Summary

The Executive Director provides strategic, operational, and financial leadership for FWRD Transylvania, overseeing staff, programs, and partnerships that drive coordinated recovery and long-term community resilience. This role requires a collaborative, community-focused leader skilled at bridging public agencies, nonprofits, and residents with empathy, integrity, and clear communication.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy
  • Lead the development and implementation of FWRD’s strategic plan and long-term recovery goals.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with local government, North Carolina Emergency Management, faith-based partners, and nonprofits.
  • Represent FWRD in community forums, media communications, and partner meetings.
  • Foster a trauma-informed, collaborative organizational culture rooted in equity, dignity, and transparency.

Program Oversight & Coordination
  • Oversee disaster case management and unmet needs processes.
  • Support the coordination of volunteer, construction, and financial resources for recovery.
  • Monitor progress toward recovery milestones and ensure effective reporting.
  • Lead planning efforts for resilience-building initiatives, community education, and preparedness.
Financial & Administrative Management
  • Develop and manage the annual budget in collaboration with the Executive Committee.
  • Ensure compliance with all grant requirements, fiscal policies, and reporting standards.
  • Pursue sustainable funding through grants, partnerships, and donations.
Staff Supervision & Organizational Development
  • Supervise the Disaster Case Manager and future team members or contractors.
  • Support staff development, wellness, and performance through clear expectations and regular check-ins.
  • Manage consultants, volunteers, and interns as needed.
Board & Committee Support
  • Partner with the Executive Committee and working committees to set agendas, track action items, and ensure effective governance.
  • Provide regular updates on organizational progress, needs, and opportunities.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and engagement of new committee members.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, social work, emergency management, nonprofit leadership, or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in nonprofit, public sector, or community leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff, budgets, and partnerships.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, equitable, and community-driven approaches.

Work Environment

Must be within commuting distance of Brevard, NC. This position requires regular presence in Transylvania County, with flexibility for occasional remote work. Some evening or weekend meetings may be required in response to community needs or disaster recovery efforts.
