In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Transylvania Habitat for Humanity has been a cornerstone of long-term recovery—rebuilding not just houses, but the stability and dignity of the families who call Transylvania County home. From the earliest days of response to the long road of rebuilding, their team has shown up for those most in need: displaced families, uninsured homeowners, and residents caught in the complexities of FEMA appeals.
🔨 Rebuilding After the Storm
Over the past 11 months, Habitat has led a bold, boots-on-the-ground recovery effort:
🚨 Emergency Response
- Responded immediately after the storm with muck-outs, drying, and mold remediation on 20 homes
🧭 Disaster Recovery Progress
- 84 total cases managed, including support for home repairs, FEMA appeals, and housing referrals
- 45 cases remain open, highlighting the long-term nature of recovery in rural, low-income communities
🛠️ Home Repairs & Rebuilds
- 10 flooded homes repaired
- 4 homes gutted and currently being rebuilt
- 4 brand-new homes under construction for displaced families, including projects on See Off Mountain Road and Johns Road
🧱 Resilience & Safety
- 32 elevation certificates obtained for storm-affected homes
- 5 mobile homes currently being elevated above the floodplain
- 6 more scheduled for elevation in the coming months
These efforts go far beyond construction—they offer a path back to safety, resilience, and peace of mind for families who lost everything. From temporary shelter to permanent housing solutions, Habitat’s approach blends compassion with practicality, ensuring that recovery is equitable and long-lasting.
🌱 The Ongoing Need
While the progress is inspiring, the need remains urgent. Dozens of families are still living in temporary housing or unsafe conditions. Habitat is actively seeking:
- Financial contributions to support continued builds and repairs
- Land donations or affordable land options to make additional new builds possible
Every dollar and every acre brings a family closer to home.
🏡 We are proud to partner with Transylvania Habitat for Humanity in the long-term recovery journey. Their commitment to housing justice is not just rebuilding what was lost—but building a stronger, safer future for all.
